What’s Happenin’

Food_Flatbread1_Hawes

Our new digs in Downtown Boise received the official seal
of approval from Boise Weekly this week. Food Editor Tara Morgan stopped by to take in the locally-sourced industrial finishings paired with the beautiful views above 8th and Main. And of course the food.

“From the second-story window of Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria’s new downtown location, Boise feels like a new city. Framed by the Eighth and Main Tower’s angular architecture, downtown looks more cosmopolitan–like you’re getting a glimpse into the future.

And the view inside is equally impressive. Rays of sunshine fall across salvaged-wood tables and bicycle-chain chandeliers equipped with dangling Edison light bulbs. The open kitchen and giant imported pizza oven are covered in shiny white tiling. It’s an aesthetic you can’t escape in bigger cities, but somehow, in this context, it feels fresh.”

Head over to Boise Weekly to read the full review.

Italians have long celebrated that eating food is far more than an act of satisfying hunger. Authentic cuisine ties us to our ancestors by passing down recipes that are woven into the fabric of our families. Food is magical in that it transports us into cherished memories, brings friends and family together, as well as helps sustain us both physically and emotionally. This is something we feel very deeply at Flatbread. We are incredibly honored when guests choose to include us in significant events in their lives, and grateful when they share their “Flatbread moments” with us. Following is a touching letter and photo we received from Diego, who wrote to tell us about how he and his mom became part of the Flatbread family after she was in a car accident that left her in the Intensive Care Unit.

8th & Main Boise Tower-Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria-Downtown Boise

Downtown Boise’s 8th & Main Tower

With the Feb. 14 opening of Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria’s new downtown location in the historic 8th and Main Tower, the company looks forward to bringing new life to a building that was once a stark reminder of the great recession, and now symbolizes renewed economic vitality and optimism for the future to many. For Flatbread owners Rob and Lisa Lumsden, this location offered another opportunity to invest in Boise through partnering with local design companies to bring its vision of a restaurant that reflects the rich culture of downtown Boise to life.

“We’ve been excited about this project since the beginning of 2012, not only for the ability to move into some of the hottest real estate in downtown Boise, but also to work with some of the Idaho’s best local businesses to evolve the design of our restaurant to embody the spirit and culture of the community that has treated us so well,” Rob Lumsden said.

Flatbread contracted with local lighting boutique Chandi to create custom chandeliers, some built solely from used bicycle parts, as a nod to Boise’s avid cycling community.

Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria-Chandi-Borah

The Borah Chandi made solely of bicycle parts.

“It is always a pleasure to be able to collaborate with local businesses on their design projects,” said Chandi Owner and Designer Meredith Clark. “The Lumsdens are firm believers in supporting local industry and artistry and, I have found, will seek out local sources as opposed to buying elsewhere,” Clark said.

Custom millwork company Reclaimed Lumber Products’ (RLP) contributions to the space include tables, wood paneling, and shelving all built from materials salvaged from old barns and corrals located throughout the Northwest. “The history associated with their location was a perfect fit for our materials because of the stories one can imagine imbedded in the old wood we use,” said Titus Gilliam, founder and owner of RLP.

RLP also made tables and paneling for Flatbread’s year old location in Salt Lake City’s historic Sugar House neighborhood. “Working with the Lumsdens, we get an instant sense of gratification knowing that the products that we build with care will go to somebody who appreciates our efforts,” Gilliam, said.

Other local craftsman include Crowell’s Custom Upholstery for all booth work and DSR Welding and Fabrication for all steel work including custom wood storage for the wood burning oven, and a custom tap tower pouring six craft beers. Classic Design Studio created the handpainted vintage mural and additional pendant light fixtures.

For Flatbread, and many in the community, the completed development of the location in the heart of downtown Boise that was known as the “Boise Hole” marks a welcome turnaround for the community. A sentiment echoed by Scott Anderson, President and CEO of Zions Bank, the building’s anchor tenant and financier.

“When you look at this building and what it has done to the skyline of Boise, I believe that it really will be the heart of the city,” Anderson said.

“We share Boiseans’ pride in returning this corner to its former glory. With 8th and Main, Gardner Company has brought together Idaho’s leading businesses and top restaurants, like Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria, that will elevate the downtown Boise experience,” Anderson said.

The new Flatbread location boasts a prime spot in the newly restored 8th and Main Tower that will indeed bring an elevated experience for its guests. The 2nd floor view will offer dramatic sunsets to the West as well as floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open wide over 8th Street, one of downtown’s cultural hubs.

“We are excited to welcome our guests to our new downtown location not only to enjoy the updated design and expanded menu options, but to appreciate an important milestone in downtown Boise’s history. It will be nice to pause and raise a glass to honor our community’s strong, vibrant culture and continued economic vitality,” Lumsden said.

“There is much to celebrate.”

Flatbread Moment – Diego and His Hospitalized Mother, Nelly, Find Support and Strength Through Pizza
